Remember your junior or senior high English teacher saying, “There is no such thing as more perfect.” I’m sure John was in his class on the days this was discussed, so I believe what John means is that this love we as we live in God moves toward perfection.
We cannot achieve this love perfection; any one in any longstanding relationship can attest to longstanding imperfections; but, with God, we do roll where once we rocked. We do bend where once we broke because our love guide, guard, and goal is our God in us.
Think about love personified for a moment. Its voice is not power, it’s persistence. It’s voice is patience. It’s peace even—or especially—when some things are not peaceful.
