The feeding of 5,000 demonstrates the presence of God to the people. This miraculous provision echoes the Exodus story of God providing manna for the people of Israel as they journeyed through the wilderness. Isaiah picks up this prophetic promise when he writes the following in chapter 25, verses 6-8.
“In Jerusalem, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will spread a wonderful feast for all the people of the world… There he will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth. He will swallow up death forever! The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears.”
Today, God continues to remove clouds of gloom. One way God does this is by reminding us of the presence (and the potential) of children. As we conclude this four-part sermon series this Sunday, it’s important to remember the feeding 5,000 includes the boy who offers his bread and fish. This detail reminds us that a bounty abounds when we include children in ministry.
As we move closer to Sunday, consider the series title, “Fill the basket.” Reflect on who God uses to achieve miracles, and how God will indeed wipe away all tears.
