Simply

John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. — John 1:8

I don’t know about you, but there are times I am wiped out from making decisions. In the grocery store just yesterday, I stood in front of boxes and boxes of crackers my foster son truly, unquestionably and completely adores. These crackers have never been on my list. Having tasted a few, they will never be on my list.

But they were on his—and getting these crackers at this stage in our relationship is a good move on my part. But, lo and behold, there are eight different kinds of the same cracker. That’s right. Eight. Yikes! Which ones did he pick up with me a week ago?

Cracker connoisseurs, I support your desire for options, yes, but point: we complicate things. When it comes to faith and our practice of it, we should really stop complicating things. Look at John here in scripture. He is not the light. He simply has to witness to tell about the light.

It is simple. Just witness to the light. Don’t worry about anything else. Just witness. No second guessing. No worrying. No standing in the cracker aisle for far too long contemplating what should never be complicated. Go, and simply witness about the light.

PRAYER: Lord, help us keep it this simple. Amen.
