“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and give his life as a ransom for many.” — Mark 10:45
“Follow the leader” is a game we may have loved as children, especially when we were the leader. In front of others, we could seemingly go anywhere and those behind us would follow.
We choose to follow Christ. As such, we look for him to lead us. We follow his actions, too. What he conveys in this text is key to understanding how we are to follow him specifically. He served. In turn, we serve, too.
There’s a bit more. As He gave his life as a ransom for many, we give our lives to him. This means we don’t serve with groans and with grumbles.
Unfortunately, too many of us do serve with complaints. Variations of this sentence have been heard too often for too long: “If only so-and-so would just get it together, then they wouldn’t need any help.”
This sentence comes as with some sort of self-entitlement, as if our time in the trenches in service gives us the license or the liberty to speak to how someone else should live or run their life.
This is not our role as servants. We aren’t to call the shots. If we are to look anywhere, it’s good to look at our own sinful lives first and, with gratitude to the work done on the cross, serve with more zeal and less comments (unless, of course, our comments raise the name of our leader).
PRAYER: Keep getting me out of the way so your way is seen in what I do and say. Amen.
