Speak words of God that are not your own

The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. — John 14:10b

It cannot be too hard to imagine that you, like Jesus, can at times speak the words of God. It is true that you, like me, certainly say—and think—other words, words that are far (or very far) from God. It is also true that you are not Jesus. But with the choices you have been given in the gift and curse of freewill, admit what I hope you’ve experienced at least once in your life: you’ve spoken the words of God.

The words of God are not your own words. You realize this as soon as you say them. They are sweeter than what you alone would say, or they may be plainly, quietly or deeply honest with a once-locked truth that sets someone free. They may be radically insightful or surprisingly prophetic. They may be nothing more than a whisper or so biblically clear in the moment that someone with you “gets it.”

Do this world a favor. When the words from God come to you and you immediately think, “I can’t say that!”, stop your block and let God be heard. Say words of God that are not your own.

You may not realize God is using you to speak. However, you have heard God speak to you through others. There was that moment, that time, or that unexpected instant when the words you heard from someone aligned or enabled you to see what you couldn’t see before, or the words released whatever had been holding you back.

How do you speak the words of God? Just be present. Fully present. And don’t think so much. And definitely get out of the way.

And then do it.

PRAYER: Jesus, use every bit of me, including what you say through me. Amen.
