In the presence of Jesus, this rich young man (Luke 18:18-30) stood in front of eternal life. What he needed to do to get the latter, eternal life, was acknowledge and receive the former, which was Christ before him.
We, too, can stand in the presence of Jesus. In doing so, we receive a never-ending life not by our merit or money, but by submitting our self wants to our Savior's welcome.
