Sometimes we just need to listen

Week Of: October 24, 2022

Scripture: Matthew 13:3-13a,31-32

The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” —Matthew 13:10

You won’t find this in scripture, but I imagine Jesus responding to the question by saying, “Some questions are easier to answer than others.”

A pause would follow. A glint in his eye would light as he continues. “Then there are those questions.”

We have those questions. Raw places that are too deep, too wide and too overwhelming reach all of us.

So, Jesus does Jesus does. He speaks. He speaks with love. He speaks with care. He speaks with intention.

I don’t know a child who doesn’t love a good story. As children of God, we need stories—stories that raise good above evil, stories where inequality is silenced by justice, stories spilling implicit and explicit mercy, and, above all, stories with a moral that doesn’t just hold love but gives us love to follow.

Let’s remember that sometimes we just need to listen, especially in particularly challenging times. Let’s also remember that in every story Jesus tells we somehow find ourselves.

We also find Jesus.

And what Jesus wants is for us to listen to Him so that we can experience His warmth, hold His truth, and know that no matter how hard it is, He will speak until we find the peace He gives.

Prayer: We are listening, Jesus. Keep talking.
