“Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me... I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” —John 14:19a, 20b NLT
When we look into a mirror, we should see Christ. After all, the Christology in this text from John explains that we will see Christ because He is in us, and we, in turn, are in Him.
I don’t see Christ when I look at myself in a mirror. I see a tired foster dad, a pastor denying the huge losses in and around his church due to the pandemic, a romantic who doesn’t have romance, and a friend who should be far more friendly to those dear ones he loves. Where is Christ in this?
Paul speaks of looking into a mirror dimly (1 Cor 13:12). We really can’t see all there is to see on this side of life. God has so much more for us to see one day.
I’m not refuting Paul. I believe he is right. I also believe we can see a whole lot more of Christ within us when we, the sinful lot that we are, intentionally try—just try—to be Christlike.
I mentioned the foster dad thing. Each day, I see such truly wonderful potential in this pack. More so, I see God in them in the now. Maybe we all need to not just look into the mirror, but pray what needs to be prayed, which is that the image of Christ in us been seen eye to eye.
PRAYER: Great God, let me see you in my own eyes, and then do something in Your name because of this. Amen.
